Combining buttons and bookmarks to create a great user experience
While Data Visualization is all about helping report users to find those critical insights 💡, we also have to remember that our report itself needs to be easy to use.
One of the things that I often see in Power BI reports is heaps of report pages. I have already talked about the drawback of that in one of my previous posts about Report Design, so I’m not going to repeat myself 😎
If you create 5+ pages in your report it could get pretty difficult for end-users to navigate through them. Especially if those page names are too long:
The best way to mitigate the risk of users not knowing which page to use is to create our own page navigation – using the combination of buttons and bookmarks. And of course some good design ideas.
While Microsoft announced during MBAS 2021 a new button experience where report developers can easily create a page navigator, I still believe it is a good idea to talk about this topic.
Who knows when MS will ship that feature… More importantly, knowing how to create this so-called “Web-like Page Navigation” is going to remain useful for the future.
With that said, let’s make sure to check out the video 👇 below to learn how to utilize buttons and bookmarks to create a better user experience.
