How to Transpose tables in Power Query

In this blog series, I’m going to walk you through three really powerful data transformation tools in Power Query.

  1. Transpose Data
  2. Pivot Columns
  3. Unpivot Columns

I believe these are the most important built-in functions you should master before you start exploring others. Additionally, these are readily available using the GUI in Power Query.

Once we cover all three of them I’m going to show an advanced data transformation exercise based on a scenario that many of us probably faced before. It could be replicated by using the video/blog post as a guide.

Moreover, as this series is all about Power Query, the features/functions mentioned throughout the posts are available both in Power BI and in Excel.

Transpose table can help us to “rotate” our data by 90 degrees. It means that we can “swap” rows with columns.

In many cases, this data transformation step is needed to allow us to adjust our raw data and to start exploring insights.

I used an example that many of you will be familiar with. Some or most of the ERP systems are going to produce a RAW export like the one I used as my starting point.
